Three men who had gone to one world awake in another. One is in the wrong time, one is in the wrong time and place, and one is exactly where he began.

Wei Wuxian is long dead, maybe (or maybe not) to return in a decade or so, though only one man presently knows that. He will, eventually, agonize about telling his mourning brother about it.

Nie Mingjue is also dead, and the Nie clan has already begun to languish under Nie Huaisang's tentative leadership.

Jin Rusong and Qin Su both currently draw breath. As does Jin Guangshan.


In time, Xichen will come to wonder what it says about him that he marks time by who has and has not yet passed away. What it says about him that there are lives he plans to save, and others he will let be extinguished.

Well, one life only, really. One that would not be mourned at all.

But first, he needs to ascertain certain things and so he inks a letter to Jin Guangyao, using the same coded language they had during the Sunshot campaign. He does not mention Shen Yuan or Trench directly, but he does bring up little Bao, outside his window singing raucously and that there has been a bit of a chill in his blood.

If Jin Guangyao remembers, then he is sure to write back quickly or even come to the Cloud Recesses post-haste.

If he doesn't remember...

Well. It's enough that Jin Guangyao is alive right now. He will look for ways of putting a wrench in the plans of others later, when he has had more time to adjust.

At least Shen Yuan is here, safe and whole (and what a shock it was to wake in the Hanshi with him there) though he has no idea how to explain any of it to his uncle or the clan's elders.

He is not one given to lying, but he cannot fathom any world where the truth would be believed.
